Submission Guidelines

dog eared magazine, a journal of book arts, focuses on bringing creativity and inspirational instruction to anyone who wants to make art books, whether you are an artist who loves the idea of creating art in a book form, a teacher trying to get students interested in SOMETHING, or an avid journaler who needs to make his or her own perfect journal. dog eared magazine covers techniques of traditional and contemporary bookbinding while keeping a careful eye on the content and purpose of an artist's book. Our focus is very concrete- we'll play with books of all kinds, but won't stray too far from the subject of BOOKS.

Each issue will have a theme which we will follow very closely. We're seeking artists' books that we can use to illustrate articles and use in a small gallery section of the magazine. Ideally, submissions should relate to the theme, although we do consider articles and art books of all kinds when choosing material for each issue.

Articles are welcome; if you haven't written for dog eared magazine before, please send a query letter first. Queries by email are welcome. We're seeking both how-to articles and in-depth features. Your query letter should explain your article idea, and should include photos, color copies, or slides of your relevant work or a sample project, if applicable. In your query letter, please state whether you'll be supplying illustrations or diagrams, and if you are, please include a sample. Your query letter should be a reflection of your writing abilities, so please plan your query carefully. If your idea fits into our editorial ideas, we'll send you a contract and more specific guidelines.

Digital submissions should be on a CD ROM, or on a zip disk. Images should be in .tiff format, 300 or 600 dpi. All text files should be in .txt or plain text format, or in Microsoft Word .doc format. Digital submissions may also be sent by email by arrangement (we won't download files that we aren't expecting.) Ideally, digital submissions should be accompanied by a hard copy of your article, which should be in a readable font, double spaced, and printed on white paper.

All materials must be accompanied by a SASE if you would like them returned.

Non-digital submissions should be double spaced, typed in a readable font, printed on white paper. Each page of your submission should include your name, the working title of the article, and the page number, and should be accompanied by a cover sheet explaining how many pages your article totals, and what supporting materials are included in your submission. Measurements should be in inches and feet- yes, we are published in the non-metric USA and so have to have our biased measurements. ;)

Submissions should be your best work, checked for spelling, grammar, and legibility. Artwork is also sought to illustrate each theme. Please send high quality photographs, slides, or actual artwork clearly labeled with your name and address, and a SASE for safe return. Ink Jet prints are not good enough. Laser prints will not reproduce well. Reproductions must be good quality, as we'll scan or take digital photos from them. For now, dog eared magazine will be black and white only, so please consider this when choosing work to submit. Please don't send attachments to e-mail unless we ask you to! If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

When submitting artwork, you may also want to submit a short statement about why you chose to use a particular book form, about the content of the art book, or about why you love to work in a certain media. These statements should be no longer than 500 words. If you'd be interested in soliciting trades, let us know, and we'd be happy to print your e-mail address or snail mail address as well. Submissions for any planned issue can be made at any time; we'll keep your artwork safe. Writers and artists will keep all copyrights to their own work, and we suggest that they officially register their copyrights.

We have a revised payment schedule, too, which is below.

We have had a tough year, and I'm grateful that the world is full of kind, patient people. Small press publishing is not easy in the best of times, but Scott and I have had many frightening adventures in the last 12 months, and each day of adventure has, alas, made the magazine a day later. With your help, we can get hundreds more great issues out into the world. But, we do need your articles, art, and support.
